At the heart of this system lies a particularly impressive Blu-ray player. Vibrant, sharp and smooth running with fast motion, the BDVEF220 delivers a first class video performance. It’s also 3D compatible and will play a vast range of other discs including MKV, XviD and SACDs. What’s more, thanks to 1080p upscaling, you’ll also gain a boost in performance from your DVDs, too. If you fancy an improvement over your existing TV’s speakers but don’t want or can’t accommodate a 5.1 speaker system, then the BDVEF220 is ideal. Coming complete with twin stereo speakers and a separate subwoofer, the BDVEF220 sounds both spacious and powerful. Thanks to S-Force Virtual Surround processing, the Sony manages to give a virtual surround effect – without the rear speakers. The Sony Entertainment Network lets you tap into a wide range of Apps via your home network hub. Connect via Ethernet or use an optional wireless dongle and you can access content such as the BBC iPlayer, YouTube plus many other great applications. There’s also a simple web browser included, letting you keep track of most web sites. Thanks to DLNA compatibility, you can also stream music and video across your network, from your laptop, PC or other connected device. With control apps available for both Apple iOS and Android you can take full control of this Sony home cinema system with your smartphone. Furthermore, you can send (or ‘push’) music, photos and video wirelessly to the big screen, via the BDVEF220. Also, web pages that are shown on your phone can be pushed to the big screen or vice versa. If you just fancy listening to music you can use the Blu-ray drive to play CDs, listen to your iPod, iPhone or USB memory stick via a USB socket or simply turn on the FM radio.

A good value package – Sony BDEF220 i’ve been using this player for just under a month and am extremely pleased with it. As a 3D Blu-ray player it’s performance is as expected from Sony; top notch picture quality on both normal and Blu-ray discs, and astounding on Blu-ray 3D. The user menus and interface is subtly displayed as white on black background, are easily followed and easy to use. The handset can be paired with a Sony tv, however I viewed the results on a Samsung 51″ 3D tv and the 3D dvd playback was amazing…

Brilliant Blu-Ray player This is the first Blu-ray player I have actually ever looked at (aside from the PS3). Before I thought that Blu-rays were a bit of a gimmick and that the picture quality was not that much better. I am eating my words now. I have to admit that I am very impressed by the clarity of the picture, everything is so much sharper. This player has the added advantage of upscaling dvds as well. Again, I was sceptical but actually you can see an improvement if you compare a dvd on a standard dvd player…

Not quite the full cinema effect, but pretty close… The 3D Blu-ray player with this system is really good, is easy to set up and easy to use. However for the best effect you need an HDMI cable that is 1.4a compliant and an Ethernet cable…
